As The Crow Flies

I don’t know if this is a good idea, as I’ve begun too many blogs over the years as it is and never kept up with them, but I’m still looking for a place to post my thoughts throughout the day. I would prefer to get away from social media in general, but writing helps me think and just writing in my diary is not always all that satisfying. I write in a my diary every day, and will likely continue to do so, but while everything isn’t worthy of becoming an essay, sometimes, I still want to put out into the world.

The traditional microblogging sites such Mastodon, Bluesky, and Threads are often too short for a good rant, which is one of the reasons why they exist. Still, I find I need a bit more room to wander. I need a place to go off without feeling the need to structure a formal essay and it's impossible to make complex arguments, even without proper sourcing and attribution, in 500 characters. It's the thing I missed about Facebook. I don't want the toxic environment back, just the space to write and think without being quite so hemmed in.

My initial thought for the title was Thoughts & Prayers, which wasn't very original, or very good, but you could sum up all my writing as hopes, dreams, fears, criticisms, and opinions. Thoughts & Prayers seemed to sum it up. I like to think of these short missives as more direct, without all my usual meanderings, more as the crow flies, but that's probably not even close to being true. In the end, I decided that As The Crow Flies was just ironic enough to suit my needs. Crows also tend to be easily distracted by shiny objects.

There's part of me that thinks I should really just be doing this on a site I host and control myself, and I still might do that, but I tire of trying to debug my own shit. I just want to write. This is almost already too complicated.
