firefly

we were curious by nature
students of the world
constantly wondering what this was
or how that worked
where did money come from?
and how does one get to Paris?
until one day
some time in our late twenties
we decided we had learned
all we needed to know
as if the world had ceased to
mystify us any longer
and we became obsessed with
making a life we believed 
would make us happy
only to realize
well along in life
that curiosity had been 
the point all along
and now we are left to wonder aloud
where all the fireflies have gone
and why no one 
looks for them anymore
but they don’t know what a firefly is
because they have never seen one
so they ignore our questions
as the musings of a senile mind
roll their eyes
and try once more
to show us how to program 
our jet pack
